The Catholic Reformation
I owe the name to a splendid book with exactly that title: The Catholic Reformation: a Very Short Introduction by James E. Kelly (Oxford University Press, 2025). The author never acknowledged the copy of The Creed in Slow Motion I sent him, but if that was because he was too busy writing this book, he is forgiven. Some of the Very Short Introductions are dreadful pot-boilers, “You said you wanted to know about this subject, so now you are going to have to sit still while I tell you” – but this book is a delight. It is authoritative, very, very interesting, and it makes one see all manner of things in a new way.
