Two books by George Weigel are relevant here. Witness to Hope is his biography of John Paul II. The Final Revolution tells the story of the end of Europe’s slavery and the part that Christianity, the Church and the Pope played in it, particularly in Poland and under the brutal regime of Czechoslovakia. It also details the opposition in many quarters in the West to any change in the oppressive status quo, and the Vatican’s shameful collaborationism before the election of a Polish Pope.
