The two-year cycle

The two-year cycle is described in detail in §§147 to 152 of the General Instruction on the Liturgy of the Hours.

How to select the two-year cycle

The Universalis website only has the one-year cycle.

The Universalis apps for iPhone/iPad and Android, and the Universalis programs for Mac and Windows, all give you a choice between the one-year cycle and the two-year cycle. They start with the one-year cycle because that is what people are familiar with from the books.

To change to the two-year cycle:

  1. Look just above the “First Reading” heading in the Office of Readings page.
  2. You will see a menu button on the right-hand side. Press it.
  3. Select “Two-year cycle” from the menu.

On big feasts which have their own readings, there is no difference between the one-year and two-year cycles, so you won’t see the menu button on those days.

The Second Readings

A two-year cycle for the Second Readings was never promulgated. So Universalis gives you the one-year cycle of Second Readings, with optional adjustments. You can read more about this here.

Saint Gregory’s Rome

My source for most of this story has been Rome in the Dark Ages, by Peter Llewellyn (Constable, 1993), ISBN 0094721505. It covers a period which has fallen entirely outside our collective historical memory; but which forms a foundation for the ages to come.
