In a vision you spoke to your holy ones.
You said, “I have given strength to a warrior,
I have raised a chosen one from the people.
I have found David my servant,
I have anointed him with my holy oil.
For my hand will always give him support,
my right arm will give him strength.
The enemy shall make no headway against him,
the son of iniquity shall have no power over him.
I will crush his foes in his sight
and strike down those who hate him.
My faithfulness and kindness shall be with him
and his strength will be triumphant through my name.
I shall extend his power over the sea,
and his right hand over the rivers.
He will call upon me: ‘you are my father,
my God and my safe refuge.’
And I shall make him my first-born,
supreme over all the kings of the earth.
My kindness to him will continue for ever,

and walk no more in the paths of my decrees;
if they profane my judgements

I will punish their transgressions with a rod,
I will punish their wickedness with a beating.
Even so, I will not turn my kindness away from him,
nor will I be untrue to my word.
I will not profane my covenant,
I will not go against the word I have spoken.
I have sworn in my sanctuary, once and for all:
I will not lie to David.
His seed shall remain for ever,
his throne firm as the sun in my sight,
just as the moon stays firm for ever,
a faithful witness in the sky.”

The nations ascend the mountain of the LordIn the days to come
the mountain of the Temple of the Lord
will be put on top of the mountains
and be lifted higher than the hills.
The peoples will stream to it,
nations without number will come to it; and they will say,
‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
to the Temple of the God of Jacob
so that he may teach us his ways
and we may walk in his paths;
since from Zion the Law will go out,
and the oracle of the Lord from Jerusalem.’
He will wield authority over many peoples
and arbitrate for mighty nations;
they will hammer their swords into ploughshares,
their spears into sickles.
Nation will not lift sword against nation,
there will be no more training for war.
Each man will sit under his vine and his fig tree,
with no one to trouble him.
The mouth of the Lord of Hosts has spoken it.
For all the peoples go forward, each in the name of its god;
but we, we go forward in the name of the Lord, our God,
for ever and evermore.
That day – it is the Lord who speaks –
I will finally gather in the lame,
and bring together those that have been led astray
and those that have suffered at my hand.
Out of the lame I will make a remnant,
and out of the weary a mighty nation.

Fortis est ut mors dilectioDie quodam beáta Ioánna hæc igníta verba dixit, quæ statim sunt fidéliter excépta:
«Fíliæ dilectíssimæ, pleríque ex nostris sanctis pátribus et colúmnis Ecclésiæ martýrio non sunt affécti: cur vobis vidétur hoc accidísse?». Postquam autem unaquǽque respóndit, «Ego vero — ait beáta illa mater — cénseo illud ídeo evenísse, quod et áliud exstat martýrium, quod appellátur amóris, in quo Deus, vitam servis suis et ancíllis sústinens, ut ad ipsíus glóriam labórent, eos mártyres simul facit et confessóres. Novi ego quandam ánimam, quam amor non minus a rebus máxime gratis separávit, quam si tyránni ictu gládii spíritum eius a córpore disiunxíssent».
Nos quidem agnóvimus de se ipsam hunc habuísse sermónem. Cum vero soror ália interrogásset quámdiu martýrium hoc perduráret: «A témporis moménto — inquit — quo nos Deo sine ulla exceptióne devóvimus usque ad extrémum vitæ. Quod tamen intellegéndum est de magnánimis homínibus, qui, nihil sibi servántes, fidem amóri servant; nam débiles parúmque amóris et constántiæ detinéntes Dóminus noster martýrio non inténdit affícere, et sinit eos suam dúcere medíocri gressu vitam, ne a se abscédant; numquam enim líberæ vim infert voluntáti».
Cum dénique flagitátum esset an hoc amóris æquáre posset córporis martýrium, «Ne quærámus — inquit — æqualitátem; quamquam álterum puto álteri non cédere, quia fortis est ut mors diléctio, et mártyres amóris mílies gravióres patiúntur dolóres in servánda vita, ut voluntátem Dei fáciant, quam si mille dare vitas debérent ad testimónium fídei, caritátis et fidelitátis perhibéndum».

The martyrdom of loveOne day Saint Jane said this: ‘My dear daughters, most of our holy Fathers, the pillars of the Church, were not martyrs. Why was this, do you think?’
After each one of us had had her say, she went on: I think it is because there is such a thing as a martyrdom of love: God keeps his servants alive to work for his glory, and this makes them martyrs and confessors at the same time. I know this is the sort of martyrdom the daughters of the Visitation will suffer, that is, those of them who are fortunate enough to set their hearts on it.’
A sister wanted to know just how this martyrdom worked out in practice.
‘Give God your unconditional consent,’ she said, ‘and then you will find out. What happens is that love seeks out the most intimate and secret place of your soul, as with a sharp sword, and cuts you off even from your own self. I know of a soul cut off in this way so that she felt it more keenly than if a tyrant had cleaved her body from her soul.’
We knew, of course, that she was speaking about herself. A sister wanted to know how long this martyrdom was likely to last.
‘From the moment we give ourselves up wholeheartedly to God until the moment we die,’ she answered. ‘But this goes for generous hearts and people who keep faith with love and don’t take back their offering; our Lord doesn’t take the trouble to make martyrs of feeble hearts and people who have little love and not much constancy; he just lets them jog along in their own little way in case they give up and slip from his hands altogether; he never forces our free will.’
She was asked whether this martyrdom of love could ever be as bad as the physical kind.
‘We won’t try to compare the two and look for equality; but I do not think the martyrdom of love is less painful than the other, because “love is strong as death”, and martyrs of love suffer infinitely more by staying alive to do God’s will than if they had to give up a thousand lives for their faith and love and loyalty.’
