First readingWisdom 1:1-7

‘Wisdom is a kindly spirit; the Spirit of the Lord has filled the world.’

Love righteousness, you rulers of the earth,
think of the Lord with uprightness
and seek him with sincerity of heart;
because he is found by those who do not put him to the test,
and manifests himself to those who do not distrust him.
For perverse thoughts separate people from God,
and when his power is tested, it convicts the foolish;
because wisdom will not enter a deceitful soul,
or dwell in a body enslaved to sin.
For a holy and disciplined spirit will flee from deceit,
and will rise and depart from foolish thoughts,
and will be ashamed at the approach of unrighteousness.
For wisdom is a kindly spirit,
and will not free a blasphemer from the guilt of his words,
because God is witness of his inmost feelings
and a true observer of his heart and a hearer of his tongue.
Because the Spirit of the Lord has filled the world,
and that which holds all things together knows what is said.

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 139(138):1-3. 4-6. 7-8. 9-10. ℟24b
Lead me, O Lord, in the way everlasting.
O Lord, you search me and you know me.
You yourself know my resting and my rising;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
You mark when I walk or lie down;
you know all my ways through and through.
Lead me, O Lord, in the way everlasting.
Before ever a word is on my tongue,
you know it, O Lord, through and through.
Behind and before, you besiege me,
your hand ever laid upon me.
Too wonderful for me, this knowledge;
too high, beyond my reach.
Lead me, O Lord, in the way everlasting.
O where can I go from your spirit,
or where can I flee from your face?
If I climb the heavens, you are there.
If I lie in Sheol, you are there.
Lead me, O Lord, in the way everlasting.
If I take the wings of the dawn
or dwell at the sea’s furthest end,
even there your hand would lead me;
your right hand would hold me fast.
Lead me, O Lord, in the way everlasting.

Gospel Acclamation
Philippians 2:15d, 16a
Alleluia, alleluia.
Shine as lights in the world,
holding fast to the word of life.
Alleluia.

GospelLuke 17:1-6

‘If he turns to you seven times in the day, saying, “I repent,” you must forgive him.’

At that time: Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung round his neck and he were cast into the sea, than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin. Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, “I repent”, you must forgive him.’
  The Apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith!’ And the Lord said, ‘If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, “Be uprooted and planted in the sea”, and it would obey you.’

First readingSirach 39:6-10

‘He will be filled with the spirit of understanding.’

He who studies the law of the Most High,
if the great Lord is willing,
he will be filled with the spirit of understanding;
he will pour forth his words of wisdom
and give thanks to the Lord in prayer.
He will direct his counsel and knowledge aright
and meditate on his secrets.
He will reveal instruction in his teaching
and will glory in the law of the Lord’s covenant.
Many will praise his understanding,
and it will never be blotted out;
his memory will not disappear,
and his name will live through all generations.
Nations will declare his wisdom,
and the congregation will proclaim his praise.

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 37(36):3-4. 5-6. 30-31. ℟30a
The mouth of the upright utters wisdom.
Trust in the Lord and do good;
then you will dwell in the land and find safe pasture.
Find your delight in the Lord,
who grants your heart’s desire.
The mouth of the upright utters wisdom.
Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him, and he will act,
and make your uprightness shine like the light,
the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.
The mouth of the upright utters wisdom.
The mouth of the upright utters wisdom,
and his tongue tells forth what is just.
The law of his God is in his heart;
his steps shall be saved from stumbling.
The mouth of the upright utters wisdom.

Gospel AcclamationMk1:17
Alleluia, alleluia!
Follow me, says the Lord,
and I will make you into fishers of men.
Alleluia!

Gospel
Matthew 16:13-19

‘You are Peter, and I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.’

At that time: When Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter replied, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.’
